Student Founder Spotlight: Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi
Dropbox, one of the most famous file hosting companies in the world, was founded in 2007 by MIT students Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi. The idea came to Houston after he kept forgetting his USB flash drive while studying at MIT. Dissatisfied with existing storage services, he decided to create a solution. Together with Ferdowsi, they secured funding from Y Combinator, and Dropbox was officially launched in 2008.
In 2011, the company expanded further by partnering with Japanese mobile providers Sony Ericsson and Softbank, ensuring the Dropbox app was pre-installed on every phone they sold. Today, Dropbox continues to provide a central place for users to store and access files, becoming a daily tool for millions of people worldwide.
